About the Protection Engineer position

ControPoint Technologies is seeking a Protection Engineer - Arc Flash Specialist to provide project support within our Distribution System Planning Engineering team and Protection & Control Engineering team. Years of experience will be evaluated and contribute to title.

As the Protection Engineer – Arc Flash Specialist, you will analyze complex power systems and develop studies for our utility and facility clients, provide mentoring/coaching to junior engineers, develop relationships with our clients, and help the team achieve short and long-term business goals. This role is fast-paced, detail-oriented, engaging, and requires leadership skills to continue the fast-growth of the team.


Position responsibilities are:

• Lead Arc-Flash Studies and operate as technical lead for arc-flash studies

• Perform and/or provide oversight for short circuit calculations, medium and low-voltage coordination evaluations to optimize protective relay and breaker settings, and arc flash studies in compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and other industry standards

• Update system models to be adequate for Arc-Flash Analysis

• Utility-scale medium voltage arc-flash and protection experience is preferred

• Knowledge of common utility operations and work practices is preferred

• Perform on and off-site data collection activities, as needed (document protective device types and associated settings, develop and document single lines and confirm loading information such as motor HP, full load amps, locked rotor amps, etc.)

• Prepare error-free engineering documents (e.g., drawings, sketches, instructions, inputs, calculations, analyses, evaluations) according to and bounded by industry codes, standards, and regulations to support client engineering needs

• Perform QA/QC on engineering deliverables performed by others

• Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to obtain required inputs, elevate roadblocks, and develop innovative solutions

• Flexibility and expertise to perform other Protection and Controls related functions

• Develop standards for power system studies and calculations across groups / offices

• Excellent customer service and project management skills

• Maintain up to date and relevant knowledge of industry codes and standards, safety culture, and design/analysis techniques suitable to the utility industry

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university

• 5+ years of experience with power system studies using electrical modeling software (ArcPro, CYME, ASPEN Oneliner, SKM, etc.)

• PE License preferred

• Experience in electrical codes, standards, and criteria for power systems and data centers (OSHA, NFPA 70 & 70E, and IEEE 1584)

• Proficient with Microsoft Suite including, but not limited to, Word and Excel

• Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to listen to clients and identify opportunities for growth

• Leadership skills with strong aptitude for mentoring, motivating junior engineers, and developing a strong culture

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• In-office preferred, but open to hybrid and remote work. Occasional travel required within North America.
